Blue Hill Memorial Hospital Holds Fifth Annual Fun Run

Blue Hill Memorial Hospital held its fifth annual 5K road race and one-mile family walk on Saturday, August 4.  More than 180 community members registered to run this year, including a group of men and women who trained for the race under the guidance of Anne Piazza, a local coach, physical therapist, and personal trainer.  Piazza works with her “trainees” on a year-round basis, organizing activities such as swimming, cycling, hiking, running, and cross-country skiing.  “This year the trainees range in age from their 20's to late 60's. Some have been with the program for 5 years, some are new this year. Some are training for marathons, some are just moving on from cardiac rehab. What they all have in common is a desire to live a healthier, more active lifestyle and they are willing to do the work it takes to get themselves there.” says Piazza.  “I could not be more inspired by any group of individuals.”

“This event helps support Blue Hill Memorial Hospital’s wellness activities and community outreach programming throughout the area we serve,” says Kelley Columber, interim director of advancement for Blue Hill Memorial Hospital.  “We are so grateful for all of Anne Piazza’s hard work in organizing this race.”

Piazza is continuing to train for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure event in Bangor and will hold her bootcamp until the snow flies, and then switch to winter activities like xc skiing and snowshoeing.  Those who are interested in joining Piazza’s team or her training activities can contact her by phone at 266-4338. 

This year, a special presentation was held to honor Chuck and Belinda Lawrence.  The Distinguished Service Award has been awarded to select recipients for their ongoing support and commitment to Blue Hill memorial Hospital’s mission.  “This award is not given out lightly” says Claire Connor, RN, MPH Chair, BHMH Board of Trustees, “but to individuals who are truly committed to improving the health and well-being of the community at large.  The Lawrences are a perfect example: not only because they support BHMH programs such as oncology & our fun run but also because they see other needs in our community as well.”

The 2012 Fun Run date for 2013 has been set has been set for Saturday, August 3.
