Dennis DeSilvey, MD, FACP, FACC, FAHA will begin seeing patients at Blue Hill Cardiovascular Medicine in early July. Blue Hill Cardiovascular Medicine is a physician practice of Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, an affiliate of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems (EMHS). Dr. DeSilvey will see patients at his practice in Blue Hill, and in Bucksport, where the hospital has a family medicine practice. He brings more than 40 years of experience to Blue Hill Cardiovascular Medicine. A graduate of Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, Dr. DeSilvey is board-certified in cardiology and internal medicine. Prior to his most recent appointment with Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, Dr. DeSilvey’s cardiovascular medicine practice was associated with Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast.
Dr. DeSilvey offers his patients a deep knowledge of nutrition (including plant-based diets), exercise, complementary medicine, and meditation. He approaches each patient as a whole person, taking the time to help them find ways to meet their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs for optimal wellness. “I view myself as a ‘wellness facilitator,’ and deeply enjoy teaching and writing as a way to communicate with my patients and our community as a whole. I encourage everyone to become active participants in their wellness. My number one goal is to prevent problems like cardiac disease and strokes. It is a privilege to help people regain control of their lives.”
Dr. DeSilvey notes that wellness must be approached one step at a time. “Increasing one’s activity level, eating healthier foods, and avoiding tobacco sound simple but can be very challenging, especially when habits have extended across a lifetime. I explain to my patients that they can control 80% of their wellness. We work together to help them adopt a healthier lifestyle.” As a physician, he tries to model a healthy lifestyle, embracing meditation, a plant-based diet, and activities such as hiking, rock climbing, skiing, and sailing.
The majority of cardiovascular medicine tests, screenings, and educational needs can be met in Blue Hill thanks to state-of-the-art equipment and highly trained staff. When a patient requires surgical intervention, Dr. DeSilvey’s patients benefit from his extensive referral relationships with the Heart Center of Eastern Maine Medical Center, Maine Medical Center (in Portland), and The Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. DeSilvey can then provide follow-up care, including cardiac rehabilitation, nutritional counseling, and more.
Dr. DeSilvey welcome referrals from any primary care provider. Patients without a primary care provider who believe they are experiencing cardiac problems can call Blue Hill Cardiovascular Medicine at 374-3930 for a personal consultation regarding their healthcare concerns.
