Maybe you do! Are you -- or someone you love -- recovering from injury or illness? Coping with a chronic condition? Professional rehabilitation can make all the difference! At Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, our therapists can help you regain your peak form or improve upon your current condition. You and your physician can determine whether rehab is appropriate for you.
Rehab Services are offered at Bucksport Family Medicine, in the Rehab Department at the hospital, in schools, and in the home through Hancock County HomeCare. From infants to seniors, we care for everyone and our expertise covers a wide range of health concerns. Your team will work together with your doctor to create a results-oriented program aimed at restoring or improving your quality of life.
The BHMH Rehab Department consists of the following services:
Physical Therapy (PT). Physical Therapists work on increasing strength, flexibility, joint movement and balance. They address how an individual moves through his or her environment. Our therapists develop programs to help patients recover from stroke, fractures, amputations, frequent falls, sports injuries, joint replacement and arthritis, and spinal cord injuries.
Occupational Therapy (OT). Occupational Therapists address patients’ ability to perform tasks and complete activities necessary for daily living within their environment. This often involves treating hand and elbow injuries. These injuries may be caused by trauma, the work place, sports or hobbies. Occupational therapists are also skilled in ergonomics and work place assessment. Additionally, they treat individuals who may have suffered from a stroke, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s disease or any of the diagnoses treated by PT. Often these two disciplines work as a team.
Speech Therapy (SLP). Speech Language Pathologists work directly with individuals to improve their ability to communicate. This involves the ability to speak, be understood, and interpret what others are saying. Patients requiring SLP help range in all ages from children with developmental delay to the geriatric population with stroke recovery. Problems in communication can be due to neurologic or motor problems. Additionally, SLP’s are specialists in swallowing techniques and are often called in to evaluate and treat patients who experience this problem following a stroke.
Respiratory Therapy (RT). Respiratory Therapy is involved in improving the ability for a patient to breathe. Often individuals’ difficulty breathing is not associated with their difficulty functioning at home or in the community. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. Shortness of breath limits one’s ability to get dressed, prepare meals, run errands, work and play with their friends and family. Respiratory therapists evaluate, address with breathing treatments and educate with OT’s on energy conservation techniques to improve breathing status for the patient.
