Blue Hill –A scam was reported to the Hancock County Sheriff's office on Tuesday, October 26th. An unidentified woman called Tom Young at the Blue Hill/Surry Transfer Station on Monday and said she represented Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. The caller said the hospital was putting out a booklet and was selling ad space to businesses in the area.
According to Mr. Young's wife, Beth, who works at the hospital, "She stated that a full page add was $450 and that prices went up from there. When Tom explained that he would have to call the selectmen for approval, the person calling didn't know what a selectman was and promptly hung up."
The Community Relations Department at the hospital confirms that this is a scam. The hospital does not conduct telephone solicitations. The hospital does not know whether other businesses have been called, or if any money has traded hands.
"This is an example of someone trying to trade on Blue Hill Memorial Hospital's good name," said Tim Garrity, CEO. "The hospital has alerted local media outlets to make sure the public knows that this is a hoax. We have also let Maine Hospital Association know, as well as local Chambers of Commerce, because businesses seemed to be targeted. We are asking that if anyone gets a similar call, that he or she call the Hancock County Sheriff's office, to let them know that the perpetrator is still phoning. "
