Karl Liebermann, DO, is the new physician at Bucksport Family Medicine, joining Kristin McDermott, DO, Karen Calcott, MD, and Barbara Daigle, FNP (Family Nurse Practitioner). Dr. Liebermann, a board-certified Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine will begin seeing patients October 30, 2006 at the clinic’s 58 Main Street location in Bucksport.
Amy Dobson, VP of Clinical Services at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, is pleased he is joining this active group of family practitioners. “We are excited to have Dr. Liebermann in Bucksport. He will provide the support we need to serve the community of Bucksport with quality healthcare.”
Dr. Liebermann took an unusual route to his medical career. After graduating from Ithaca College (NY) with a degree in Accounting in 1992, he decided this was not the career for him. Instead, strongly influenced by his earlier experience with high school and collegiate wrestling, he decided to pursue a career in nutrition and sciences. “Proper nutrition and training made a huge difference in my performance as a wrestler, and kept me sharp mentally,” he claims. “This sparked my interest in nutrition, to the point of planning for a degree in that specialty. But one thing led to another and I ended up applying to med school. This wasn’t something I figured out when I was younger,” he says.
Originally from Reading, MA, Dr. Liebermann’s connection to Maine began by spending many happy childhood summers at his family’s place in Bridgton. When he decided to study medicine, he attended the University of New England, College of Osteopathic Medicine, in Biddeford, graduating in 2002 with a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. After finishing an internship and family practice residency in 2005 at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, ME he completed a Fellowship in Osteopathic Manipulation.
When it came time to choose where he wanted to practice medicine, Dr. Liebermann chose to stay in Maine. “My wife, Jen Varney, is from nearby Lamoine, and we wanted to raise our family here,” he says, and adds with a smile, “our growing family – a 13-year old step-son, a 16-month old daughter, and a baby on the way, due in February!”
Dr. Liebermann is looking forward to working at Bucksport Family Medicine. “I’m happy to be part of this busy practice,” he says. “My focus will be combining my traditional training with osteopathic medicine, so that one’s body is in the best condition to heal itself. I want to help build community awareness of health prevention, as well.”
