Karen Calcott, MD, didn’t always want to be a doctor - of humans, that is. “When I was a kid, I cared for pets, horses, birds with broken wings - I wanted to be an animal doctor.” Although she was a pre-vet student in college, and enjoyed working for a vet for a few years, “something was calling me to start working more with people. I became fascinated with human physiology. I thought if working with animals was rewarding I can imagine what it must be like taking care of people.”
In her practice, Dr. Calcott strongly emphasizes preventive medicine and living a healthy lifestyle - going for a walk every day, eating a wholesome balanced diet, and allowing daily time for family and something you enjoy. She practices medicine by example. "It is very rewarding to be able to teach my patients what I've learned, and see the benefits as they institute these changes for themselves.” She keeps herself healthy by working out at the gym, walking and having "an obsessively healthy, organic diet." Dr.Calcott maintains "I've felt like a new person since having started doing these things for myself."
Dr. Calcott thinks Blue Hill Memorial Hospital and Bucksport Family Medicine will be a good fit. “I’m delighted to be here, I’m really excited, and I’m ready to get to work.”
When not practicing medicine, she enjoys spending time with her partner Lenn and 2 Siamese (feline) "children" - Klio and George, tending her orchids and indoor garden, playing piano, and birdwatching. She is passionately interested in environmental issues. “I think that even with the best preventive care, technological advances, economic growth and social policies, if we don't take care of our environment, little else will matter.”
Although Dr. Calcott lived most of her live in Florida, she is convinced she must be a Mainer at heart. “Seven years ago I crossed the Maine border and said, ‘This is it!’, and I don’t plan on leaving.” |
