BLUE HILL — To ensure access to a physician in the emergency department, Blue Hill Memorial Hospital (BHMH) has hired an Emergency Department/Inpatient Care Team physician to join the staff.
Fran Cantor, MD is a board-certified Emergency Medicine physician, who received her training in emergency medicine from SUNY at Stonybrook. She will provide peak daytime coverage for the emergency department and develop a "Hospitalist" role for BHMH. Physician assistants will remain in their current roles, being available around the clock, in addition to assisting the Hospitalist with inpatients.
What is a Hospitalist? A Hospitalist is a physician who specializes in caring for patients in the hospital. In many areas of the country, primary care physicians are referring their patients to a Hospitalist when their patients require hospitalization. While in the hospital, patients are seen and cared for by the Hospitalist, then see their regular doctor again once they are discharged. By fall, BHMH will have a second physician on the team and be able to provide Hospitalist service. Physicians will have the option to use the Hospitalist service or to follow their own inpatients.
The addition of physicians in the Emergency Department and a Hospitalist service will improve access to care across the BHMH continuum. Hospitalists are more available to patients and families because they are here throughout the day. As a Hospitalist, Dr. Cantor will be able to see patients multiple times, be readily available for an emergency, and be more accessible to clinical staff and families. She will speak with the patient's primary care physician regularly and inform him or her of the patient's progress and plan of care. Dr. Cantor notes, "I take a great deal of pleasure in caring for people. The time spent one-to-one is something I really value. I look for a partnership with the patient to promote his or her well-being."
